LUCKNOW:

Assembly elections are going to be held after a week and Khadi showrooms and outlets are getting ready use Mahatma's icon to dress up leaders, supporters and rallyists of all political parties.

"We did good business in white khadi kurtas in the 2002 Assembly elections and do not want to miss out on the opportunity this time," said A K Dwivedi, in charge of Kendriya Vastragaar, Central Textile godown of UP Khadi and Village Industries Board.

Our outlet at Mall Avenue has asked suppliers to keep godowns well-stocked with white kurtas of different varieties and quality, said Dwivedi.

Biggest business in readymade white khadi kurta is done in eastern UP, said R K Tiwari of Khadi showroom at Gorakhpur.

They were able to sell kurtas worth around Rs20,000 in three months during last Vidhan Sabha elections.

Manufacturing units have been asked to send at least 30 to 40 kurtas every week, said Harishankar Mishra, Khadi Gramyodyog's godown in-charge in Varanasi district.

His poll-time customer base is of small time politicians, so kurtas priced from Rs70 onwards are stocked.

High-end variety kurtas priced in Rs355-500 range are also stocked for big leaders, contesting elections, Dwivedi said. "Our units began making these the moment election dates were announced."

Sources said it that Khadi and Village Industries did business worth Rs1.25 lakh, across the state, within three months during 2002 polls.
