Chea Mony, the president of Free Trade Union (FTU) of Workers of the Kingdom of Cambodia, has threatened that union would call a strike if National Assembly decides to decrease night wages from 200 to 130 percent of day rates in a vote scheduled for May 17, 2007.
The country's national economy highly depends on its garment sector. FTU has nearly 70,000 members and most of these are engaged in the garment industry.
Garment manufacturers in Cambodia have shown concern regarding high overheads and wages compared to other garment producing nations, which would make it less popular manufacturing base as compared to other countries like Bangladesh and Vietnam.
According to Mony, the union members will support the strike.
