The Labour Minister of Karnataka, recently announced that the government was committed to increasing the minimum wages in the unorganized sector, particularly, the garment manufacturing industry, which has a mass base in the state.

He said that this proposal had met with opposition from the clothing manufacturers who had represented that it would be impossible to pay these additional wages, under the present conditions.

The increase in minimum wage has been increased by Rs 28 per day and had been announced in March this year and had been due for revision in 2007.
