Footwear and apparel firm Nike expects to cut 700 jobs at its Oregon headquarters near Beaverton by early January as part of a restructuring the company announced summer this year, it announced recently. Its earlier estimate of its Oregon layoffs was reportedly around 500. The recent cutbacks announced were part of a brief legal filing with state workforce officials.

In July, Nike said it will spend up to $250 million cutting jobs worldwide as new chief executive officer John Donahoe refocuses the business to emphasise online sales directly to consumers. The company employed 75,400 at the end of May, down 1,600 from a year earlier.

The Oregon layoffs include 200 at its company childcare centre, which is closing permanently, a global newswire reported.
