This is as per media reports, which added since September, ship arrivals at the port have dramatically dwindled, plunging from 25 in August to a mere 6 by October, citing the Ministry of Shipping sources.
In response, a high-level delegation including Private Industry and Investment adviser to Prime Minister, Salman F Rahman and minister for Environment, Forests and Climate Change, Saber Hossain Chowdhury conducted an on-site inspection and met with stakeholders to address the crisis.
Rahman affirmed their commitment to identifying and promptly resolving the port’s underlying issues.
Efforts are underway to revitalise Pangaon port into a profitable entity by improving cargo handling services to alleviate road congestion, Rahman disclosed.
Plans to attract more cargo traffic and streamline operations aim to mitigate the plight of workers facing diminished earnings due to the scarcity of ships.
Meanwhile, a senior customs official acknowledged challenges, attributing decreased imports to financial burdens incurred by consignments held for weeks and exorbitant port charges while underscoring the need for stringent enforcement against misdeclaration despite opposition from certain business factions.
Recent meetings echo earlier efforts to address port issues, with importers citing impediments hindering port usage.
