Readymade garment (RMG) factory owners in Bangladesh have agreed not to sack workers until the next Eid-ul-Fitr as the sector struggles amid the COVID-19 crisis, according to the country’s labour and employment ministry, which recently said the decision was taken at a meeting on May 4 in presence of state minister for labour and employment Begum Monnujan Sufian.
Factory owners also agreed to pay 65 per cent gross salaries to workers who didn’t work in April. The government had previously announced a Tk 5,000-crore stimulus package for the export-oriented industries to pay wages and allowances of their workers.
