Faruque Hassan, president of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), has called upon the embassy to bolster bilateral trade and investment ties, particularly by attracting Italian investments into Bangladesh’s burgeoning industrial sectors.

During a courtesy visit to ambassador Monirul Islam at the embassy in Rome, Faruque emphasised the need for collaboration to promote trade and investment between the two nations.

Embassy officials, including economic counsellor Md. Al Amin and first secretary (Labour) Ashif Anam Siddique, were also present during the meeting.

Discussions revolved around the vast trade and investment potential between Bangladesh and Italy, with a specific emphasis on boosting Bangladeshi garment exports to Italy, particularly high-value fashion products.

Faruque Hassan provided insights into the current state, future prospects, and vision of Bangladesh’s apparel industry, highlighting its transition towards high-end fashion items crafted from manmade fibres and technical textiles.

Given the substantial demand for such products in the Italian market, Faruque stressed the ample opportunity for Bangladesh to meet this demand even as he outlined potential investment sectors for Italian investors, spanning non-cotton textiles, food processing, IT, engineering, leather, and shipbuilding.

Furthermore, Faruque Hassan sought the embassy’s aid in attracting Italian apparel buyers who have not yet tapped into Bangladesh’s market.

He underscored the importance of the direct flight between Dhaka and Rome in facilitating business communication and urged the streamlining of consular services and visa processes to promote increased business interactions.

Additionally, the BGMEA president urged ambassador Monirul to facilitate collaborations between BGMEA University of Fashion and Technology (BUFT) and Italian fashion institutes to enhance the skills of BUFT students, further solidifying bilateral ties in the fashion industry.
