A bill titled 'The Textile Act, 2018' was introduced in the Bangladeshi parliament on June 10 by state minister for textiles and jute Mirza Azam to maintain the quality of textile products, which contribute a lot to foreign currency earnings. The bill was sent for further examination to a scrutiny committee that will submit its report within 15 working days.

According to the draft law, a directorate headed by a director general (DG) will be formed and the DG will function as its registrar and will be responsible to inspect quality and standard of various elements used in textile products, including paints and chemicals, according to Bangladeshi media reports.

The government may establish a laboratory to carry out such quality checks. (DS)
