The garment industry can create the maximum job opportunities in Myanmar, said the country’s labour, immigration and population minister Thein Swe at a ceremony to reward the best garment factories and the most outstanding trainees from garment training schools at an event of the Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry (UMFCCI) last week.

The minister urged entrepreneurs and the Myanmar Garment Entrepreneurs Association (MGEA) to cooperate, according to a report in a Myanmarese newspaper.

In December 2018, there were 356 garment factories and 217,787 garment workers, with Yangon topping the list with 310 garment factories and 179,152 garment workers.

According to MGEA estimates, export earning from the garment industry in 2022 is projected to reach $8-10 billion. The industry is expected to create 1.5 million jobs and most of workers will be female, the minister said. (DS)
