Readymade garment products should be provided duty-free access to the US markets, pleads M Morshed Khan, Foreign Minister of Bangladesh.
Considering in the context of recently concluded WTO meet in Hong Kong, it is of prime importance for Bangladesh to get at least some of its readymade garment products included in the list of 97 percent items that would be allowed duty-free access to US, said Khan, addressing 15th US Trade Show 2006 at Dhaka Sheraton Hotel.
Khan hoped that the US Congress would react positively about the clause of Tariff Relief Assistance for Developing Economies (TRADE) Act 2005.
Khan said the clause under the Act would enable Bangladesh to strengthen its competitive niche with setting up of growing number of backward-linkage industries.
He also stated that during the last three years, net annual FDI inflow into Bangladesh went up 34 percent.
In last fiscal, Bangladesh exported goods worth US $2.5 billion while it imported items worth $3 million during the same period, said Judith A Chammas, US envoy to Bangladesh.
She also hoped that through this trade show people will be able to know about the quality of US products.
The trade show is jointly organised by the American Chamber of Commerce in Bangladesh and United States Embassy in Dhaka.
