The Karnataka Government has approved an exclusive SEZ (special economic zone) for apparels and textiles, to be set up at an investment of Rs1,250 crore.
The proposed SEZ will be set up on a 400 acres to house about 50 factories employing around 50,000 workers.
India's biggest garment exporter, Gokaldas Exports is instrumental in setting up the SEZ with an investment of Rs100 crore.
Remaining investment will come from other companies that will set up factories in the SEZ.
Gokaldas Exports Director Rajendra Hinduja informed that the SEZ is expected to be ready in two years.
The SEZ will incorporate different segments such as spinning, weaving, dyeing and garmenting units, accessories' manufacturers such as threads, buttons, fasteners, labels and corrugated boxes.
The park will also have infrastructure to house customs office, banks, effluent treatment plant, dispensaries, shopping area, restaurants, container freight station and truck yard.
Independent apparel training centre and laboratory for testing of fabrics and raw materials is also to be set up.
It is expected that customs duties and other taxes may be waived to make SEZ competitive and a viable initiative for global markets.
Meanwhile, the state government has also been promoting an apparel park in Doddaballapur.
