Labour & Safety standards a must to expand export

A continuous effort to comply with all labour standard and safety measures in garments sector is necessary to enhance the reputation and competitiveness of Bangladesh's exports in global market.

Charge d'Affaires of the Delegation of the European Commission (EC) to Bangladesh, Anthony Goodwin said this at a seminar on, Cultivating Social Compliance Across Export Sectors.

He called for an effective legislation on building standards and health and safety in all export industries by having regular inspection and monitoring of premises.

The EC's new rule states tenderers who were awarded contracts by it must respect basic labour standards, Goodwin said at seminar by EC in collaboration with Nari Uddus Kendra (NUK), a Non Government Organization (NGO) at BRAC centre.

The seminar was divided into two segments with first segment identifying priorities in realization of labour standards and increasing its monitoring.

Second segment highlighted the role of civil society in monitoring and evaluating labour standards especially in garment sector.

Representatives from Government, civil society, manufacturing organizations, trade bodies, buyers and diplomatic missions participated in the seminar.
