Wage structure proposed by the wage board for the readymade garments (RMG) workers has been rejected by Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA).

In an emergency meeting, the association asked for more time to settle the issue with workers. It said the implementation of proposed wages would force the closure of large number of RMG factories.

President of the BGMEA SM Fazlul Hoque said that since apparel sector produces most of country's foreign exchange earnings, Government must give time to settle the issue. He also asked RMG owners to evaluate the economic impact of the wage structure that has been proposed on their units.

Former President of BGMEA, Annisul Huq who was representing owners at the wage board informed that implementation of proposed entry-point wage at Tk1604 would cause the closure of 50 percent of garment units.

Huq hoped that negotiations were still possible between the workers and owners asking workers to fish out the leaders who have been inducing them to indulge in wrong thing neglecting the economy.

Owners have asked the Government to provide 25 percent cash incentive in order to survive and also to pay the wages of the workers.
