Goonj, a Delhi based organization which has been set up in 1998 in an attempt to help deprived people with one of the basic needs of human being – clothes.
It distributes used clothes and other material to the poor in rural and urban areas through volunteers and other organizations.
The group has branches in Chennai, Bombay, Delhi and Jalandhar and distributes the collected material in 18 states of the country after mending and cleaning.
Recently the organisation has started selling handmade products like recycled notebooks, cloth bags from used cloth, coasters and wallets.
Another significant project of Goonj is to offer clean waste cloth for women to utilize as sanitary napkins. This is a very important step towards improving the health and hygiene of women in rural areas of the country.
On the first of January, Goonj organized four camps in Noida, Dwarka, Patparganj and Naraina to increase responsiveness on the city's clothing needs which they celebrated as a Cloth Day.
