On day before yesterday, readymade garment exporters sought permission for import of raw material from third country for manufacturing 6 million pieces of apparel items to be exported to India under SAFTA.
This demand was raised by exporters during opinion sharing meeting at Commerce Ministry on the procedural arrangements for exporting apparel items under the SAFTA deal that allows Bangladesh to export 6 million pieces to India at discounted rate.
The meeting was chaired by Commerce Secretary Firoz Ahmed and was attended by trade body leaders' apparel industry stakeholders and other officials of Commerce Ministry.
Exports stressed on inclusion of all modes of transportation and all ports for exports to enter India.
They are doubtful of exports reaching cities like New Delhi and Bombay under current provision of draft MoU.
They were also surprised on India decision to negotiate preferential treatment instead of the zero-tariff as agreed earlier.
In the meeting, exporters also enquired about renewal of the agreement so that they can continue exports to India.
