Bangladesh ready made garment (RMG), the export earning sector employs about 2.5 million workers and 80 percent of them are women.

To ensure security and provide accommodation facilities for female workers, Chittagong Development Authority (CDA) has undertaken a housing project, out of its own fund with Government assistance.

CDA plans to provide lodging facilities to 1000 female garment workers along with a market, a hospital, open grounds and gardens, in Chittagong. The project would be constructed over two acres of land in the port city's Saltgola area.

This initiative of CDA would help to lessen the acute housing problem of female garment workers in Chittagong. The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) has termed this step as an encouraging one which would help the women work in a secured and pressure-free atmosphere.
