The country's Readymade Garment (RMG) sector has registered nearly 16 percent growth in exports since January this year, which puts to rest all negative aprehensions about the industry, stated Commerce Minister Altaf Hossain Chowdhury.
Addressing a function on RMG sector, Chowdhury said that the predictions of International Monetary Fund, World Bank, Asian Development Bank, German consultant and two other universities about future of the RMG in post MFA era have all proven wrong in the end, as the sector sustains significant growth with its growing exports pace.
Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) organised the function titled "Inauguration and Unveiling of Poster Relating to Compliance Issues in the RGM Sector" at its conference hall.
The acceptance of social compliance is very important for the RMG sector to survive in the post quota era, as the compliance is desired by the buyers, and is very necessary to proceed with the vertical growing export trend, the minister added.
The government has accorded top most priority to the compliance issue and has set-up Social Compliance Forum for RMG, and has also taken steps to form two taskforces and launch a Compliance Monitoring Cell in the Export Promotion Bureau.
The taskforces will be responsible to work out strategies to cater buyers' demands and roll out initiatives based on the current socio-economic condition, Chowdhury said.
BGMEA President Anisul Haque stated that country's top body for the apparel industry would try its level best to implement the compliance.
A media campaign would be launched to make the owners, workers and mass people aware about the compliance issue, Haque said.
Chaired by BGMEA President Anisul Haque, the function was addressed, among others, by its Directors SM Fazlul Haque and Shahadat Hossain Arun, Bangladesh Garment Sramik Oikya Parisad (BGSOP) President Delwar Hossain Khan, BGSOP leader Towhidur Rahman and National Garments Sramik Federation General Secretary Amirul Haque.
