The EU has decided to withdraw the special protection measures on Chinese export clothing in 2008. This decision has concerned Bangladesh, as it may have an adverse effect on country's clothing industry.

Recently, Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA), Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) and other organizations have urged the Government to canvass for prolonging the special protection measures (SPM) on Chinese clothing export to EU.

Bangladesh also proposed that more preferences should be offered to the least-developed countries on the basis of Generalized System of Preferences (GSP) and also demanded implementation of new rules of origin.

In the 2006-07 fiscal Bangladesh exported knitted and tatting products worth US $2.74 billion and $1.74 billion, respectively.
