A committee for Women and Child Welfare, attached to the legislature in the Government of Karnataka, after visiting a few garment units, has remarked that there are discrepancies in the wages and functioning of these apparel manufacturing units.
In a report submitted to the legislature, the committee has suggested from among many measures, increasing the minimum wage of these garment workers to Rs 4,000 per month from the Rs 3,000 they are drawing now.
They have observed that in some of the big and well known garment manufacturing units, there is no apparent difference in wages per month of a worker who has experience of more than 10 years vis-à-vis, some one who has just 1-2 years of experience.
Among other welfare measures, it has also recommended free transport to women garment workers and payment of bonus to all employees and also host sports and cultural activities for them along with allowing them to conduct union activities.
