Govt closes door on rollback of excise duty on garments

“The government will not roll-back the mandatory excise duty imposed on branded clothing imposed in the budget”, said, Revenue Secretary – Mr Sunil Mitra.

He added by saying, “the garment sector has been enjoying tax exemption ever since independence and it is now time to discipline the sector”.

He informed that, the intention was not to tax small manufacturers and that exemption to the SSI had been given to the extent of Rs 89 million and since the sector was paying VAT, it should pay excise too.
