The Uttar Pradesh (UP) government yesterday clarified that all kinds of export units registered with the micro, small and medium enterprises (MSME) and export promotion department shall be allowed to operate. Garment export units in Gautam Budh Nagar district (Noida) in the Delhi National Capital Region heaved a sigh of relief following the clarification.
A May 1 order issued by the ministry of home affairs allowed special economic zones (SEZs) and export-oriented units (EOUs) to start operations from May 4 leading to confusion among exporters in Noida and Greater Noida. Following that, more than 600 exporters sent requests to the Noida and Greater Noida authorities to grant them permission to resume work with minimal staff.
But authority officials facilitated applications of only ‘100% export oriented units’ registered under the central ministry of commerce and industry, putting the rest on hold.
With the clarification coming, the list of 611 registered garment exporters was forwarded to the Noida district magistrate and processed began soon after, according to Indian media reports.
In the second phase of the lockdown, the UP government had permitted nine industries to function with some restrictions. These included textile (barring garments), cement, steel and chemicals.
