The downward slide of Nepalese readymade garment export scenario continues to paint a grim picture in 2006 as well, with a fall of 8 percent in January.
Nepal exported garment worth $5.60 million during the month, compared to $6.08 million in corresponding month of last year, as per data released by Garment Association of Nepal (GAN).
The termination of quota free access to Nepalese readymade garments from 1 January 2005 contributed to a slide of 41 percent in exports in 2005.
Largest foreign currency earner for the country is facing a downward slide for the 15th consecutive month.
Nepalese readymade garment export industry had recorded a decline of 30 percent in the year 2004.
Garment manufacturing units have gone down to 25 with almost 50,000 people losing their jobs due to continuous decline, said GAN.
Garment industry has proposed setting up of garment processing zone and make efforts to provide duty free access to readymade garments to revive garment industry.
