A report published early this month expressed fears that Bangladesh might lose a large part of its apparel export market if it failed to comply with a common code of conduct developed by the global buyers.

Foreign buyers and retailers in particular, have established a London-based platform under the banner, the MFA Forum, and set a timeframe for compliance of its specific conditions, including freedom of associations and employment relations, by the country.

Meanwhile, it is learnt that on Sunday, government and RMG industry had set up a meet to work out the common codes of the MFA Forum.

Labour unrest, child labour, poor working conditions and recent incidents of factory fires have all raised concerns among international bodies seek compliance by the government and the Bangladesh Garments Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) in the post textile quotas phase-out.

Most pathetic is the situation of the women worker who constitute majority among those most exploited, slogging for hour at stretch without a break, working for a pittance.

It is time now, for the industry and the Government to work in a concerted manner, and provide besides quality ready made garments and dressing the world, to make efforts to ensure compliance.
