Ministry of Commerce has called on Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) to carry out a thorough study so as to shut down all the nonconforming units within a couple of weeks.
BGMEA has been ordered to recognize and close down the factories that do not comply with the existing rules in the country.
This action was taken after the disastrous fire accident at garment factory of Kalurghat in Chittagong last week that killed over 84 workers.
Besides this, an important client of Bangladeshi garments cancelled the orders expressing concern over child labour in these units.
Analysts predict that of the 4000 garment factories here, most of them are noncompliant with the safety and other rules.
Since 1990, around 370 garment and textile employees have been killed and about 3000 suffered serious injuries in 23 fires at readymade garment factories in the country.
