Benefits of Sourcing In India:
1. It's not China. Now that the EU has initiated a dumping case against all leather shoes from China (and Vietnam), and we can anticipate large punitive duties soon as a result, we should explore other sourcing options.
2. India has some very interesting statistics:
? Second Largest Shoe Producing Country in the world
? Has the world's largest livestock population and a thriving tanning
? Industry (second largest employer in the country)
?16 percent of world footwear production takes place there
? Exports of 92 million pairs
? 75 percent of exports to EU and the US
3. English is the common language, so there will be no language barrier as we have in many other countries where we source.
4. The EU has recently adopted a liberalized GSP policy for India, granting preferential duties on footwear imports.
5. Major International Brands already source in India, including Walmart, Florsheim, Nunn Bush, Stacy Adams, Gabor, Clarks, Hush Puppies, Versace, NEXT, Hugo Boss, Tommy Hilfiger, K Shoes, Nike, Reebok, Ecco, Deichman, Elefanten, St Michaels, Hasley, Salamander, Marks and Spencer, Cole Haan, Adidas, Fila, Nautica, Rockport and Ben Sherman
6. Highly educated and highly motivated workers and entrepreneurs.
7. Huge domestic market to explore as well as sales to other countries. India's population is set to cross 1.3 billion and its fast growing middle class and upper class of 350 million people have a disposable income similar to those in the U.S.
