The COSATU-affiliated Southern African Clothing & Textile Workers' Union (SACTWU) has successfully interdicted the employer of Simunye Clothing in Newcastle from proceeding with the retrenchment of workers.

The judgment was handed down on Friday, in the Durban Labour Court. The Honourable Justice Cele ruled that the company is to comply with a fair procedure in the event of it proposing retrenchments, that the employer is interdicted and restrained from dismissing any of the employees without complying with the requirements of the Labour Relations Act, ordered the employer to re-instate any workers already retrenched.

Simunye Clothing is owned by Mr Alex Liu, the chairman of the Newcastle Chinese Chamber of Commerce, who was intent on willy nilly dismissing workers.

SACTWU is determined to fight any such unfairness.
