South Africa’s National Bargaining Council for the Clothing Manufacturing Industry has till May 4 accredited 388 firms with a total fabric face mask manufacturing capacity of 13.9 million per week. It had initiated a programme two weeks ago to accredit apparel manufacturers for fabric face mask production in response to a call of President Cyril Ramaphosa.

The majority of these accredited fabric face mask manufacturers are micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), according to a press release from The Southern African Clothing and Textile Workers' Union (SACTWU).

Ramaphosa has called for the industry to significantly ramp up fabric face mask manufacturing on a priority basis to help combat the spread of COVID-19.

Very recently, the council’s COVID-19 Rapid Response Task Team (COVID-19 RRT) approved 217 micro manufacturing enterprises for accreditation as manufacturers of PPE and other essential products. These micro enterprises employ less than six workers each.

Benefits of the accreditation certification process include free advertising for such companies on Proudly South African’s recently launched dedicated fabric face mask portal.
