The average British woman stacks £504 worth unwanted clothing. Seventeen per cent hold on to those for sentimental reasons, while 18 per cent do so in the hope of fitting into those again, says a survey released to mark the launch of Patatam.co.uk, which aims to encourage more ethical shopping by buying and selling Brits’ quality branded preloved clothing.

While the appetite for second-hand clothing has increased by 19 per cent in two years, 92 per cent of the survey respondents want to dispose of the used clothes in an ethical way, a blog on Patatam website said.

As the appetite for more sustainable fashion practices grows, the study revealed British women’s wardrobes are bursting with over £13 billion worth of unwanted clothes.

However, the research shows that awareness of more responsible fashion practices are growing, as 92 per cent said they would prefer to sell these kinds of items on to someone else, rather than simply throwing them away.

But for many, not having the time to do so or not wanting to deal with members of the public puts them off.

An estimated 235 million items of unwanted clothing went to landfill in 2017. A growing number of services like Patatam are being established to avoid this.

Patatam provides quality pre-loved women’s and children’s clothing at prices 70% less than the high street, via its website. Consumers can also sell their quality, preloved clothing directly to Patatam using its free Patabag service. (DS)
