The wage payment system of readymade garment (RMG) sector workers is going to be digitised soon, Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) president Rubana Huq said at a knowledge-sharing event on digital wage payments issue organised by the International Finance Corporation (IFC), a member of the World Bank Group, in Dhaka.

IFC is trying to establish the business case for digital wage payments using mobile financial services in the RMG sector and launched a series of resources to enable garment factories to transition from cash to mobile-based wage payments for their workers, according to Bangla media reports.

Huq said BGMEA is going to sign a memorandum of understanding with the government for RMG workers to receive their wages under the digitised system soon.

She urged the country’s mobile financial service providers like bKash to come forward to join the ‘e-Wallet for RMG Workers’ platform. (DS)
