Yet another fire incident has struck the $28 billion Bangladesh garment industry, just when it seemed that the industry has walked a long way since the deadly 2013 Rana Plaza disaster that killed over 1,100 people. This time, the fire broke out in a garment factory (after working hours) in Munshiganj district killing 6 people and injuring several others.

The fire took place in the chemicals storage area of the factory. Since the factory was closed, the fatality was low, said Bangladeshi media reports.

After China, the Bangladesh garment industry is the second biggest in the world. Over 80 per cent of the country's export earnings are from the garments industry which also provides employment to over 4 million, mostly women. (RR)
