Thanking the UK government for its new Developing Countries Trading Scheme (DCTS) that permitted such a benefit until 2029, BGMEA president Faruque Hassan, in a letter to British high commissioner to Bangladesh Sarah Cooke, cited severe impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the global fashion industry and the domestic RMG sector as the reason for the request.
He also sought UK government support to raise the price of products in line with a possible increase in workers’ wages in his country.
“The government of Bangladesh has formed a minimum wage board and it is expected that wages will be increased quite substantially. We hope that the industry will receive utmost support from the stakeholders to ensure benefit of this wage increase, especially of the buyers,” domestic media outlets reported quoting the BGMEA letter.
The letter requested the United Kingdom to clarify the issue of rules of origin for both LDCs’ framework and enhanced framework, particularly for apparel items.
DCTS allows duty-free access for two-thirds of product lines under the enhanced framework. BGMEA sought clarification on how Bangladesh can access the information on product coverage.
