Bangladesh’s readymade garment (RMG) industry now has 155 green factories with the US Green Building Council’s (USGBC) Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification, the highest in the world. The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) said the country’s RMG sector has 46 platinum, 95 gold, 10 silver and another four LEED-certified factory buildings as of January 10.

Sharmin Apparels Ltd and Sharmin Fashion Ltd recently obtained the platinum certificate whereas AM Design Ltd obtained the gold certificate, according to Bangladeshi media reports.

A green factory helps cut down the energy usage by 40 per cent and water consumption by more than 30 per cent. It also emits less carbon that further ensures environmental safety.

BGMEA president Faruque Hassan said the country's 500 more factories are in the process of getting LEED certification.
