Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) president Siddiqur Rahman recently blamed a vested quarter that continues to criticize and spread propaganda against a safe and transparent industry in Bangladesh in the name of research. Any such negative campaign will affect the workers much more than the industry, he said.

He made the remarks at a press conference ahead of the fifth anniversary of Rana Plaza disaster on April 24, according to a Bangladeshi news agency report.

Garments units are now being established after fulfilling conditions of the Alliance for Bangladesh Workers Safety and following the directions of the Bangladesh National Building Code (BNBC), he said.

BGMEA is now more alert in issuing new membership and has established a directive for sub-contracting garment manufacturing as well, he said.

A ‘Transitional Accord’ will start work from June 1 for six months with a monitoring committee with representatives from brands, BGMEA and trade unions. The Safety Monitoring Organisation (SMO) will be another platform for checking safety after the six-month period of Accord is over, Rahman added. (DS)
