Garment workers will receive their monthly wages on time amid the ongoing corona virus crisis, according to Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) president Rubana Huq, who recently said in a video message that more than 1.2 million workers will be affected due to such cancellation and suspension of work orders by foreign clients.

“Don’t be afraid, have reliance. All workers will be paid in time,” Huq said, adding that the government has assured its all-out support to the country’s readymade garment (RMG) sector.

Buyers have cancelled or held orders worth $1.5 billion in the last few days and uncertainty looms when they will ask for shipments of existing inventory.

She urged member factories not to lose patience, saying the prime minister will deliver a speech on March 25 and they are waiting for her instruction.

She also called on media outlets not to publish any news that might create panic and appealed to global brands to receive the existing apparel inventory from factories.

Otherwise, she worried all factories irrespective of production capacity would be closed for the next six months.
