The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) recently sought Tk 5.5 crore from the fund provided by the World Trade Organisation (WTO) to Bangladesh as a least developed country to support a move for research and development, innovation, product diversification and value addition for making the readymade garments (RMG) sector sustainable.

BGMEA president Rubana Huq handed a letter to commerce minister Tupu Munshi seeking the assistance amount, according to media reports in Bangladesh.

The commerce ministry is considering the BGMEA demand, Munshi said.

The BGMEA has reportedly demanded Tk 2 crore for research and development for future sustainability of the RMG sector, TK 75 lakh for establishment of a productivity centre, Tk 75 lakh for development of harmonised and unified planning tools for the sector and Tk 2 crore for product innovation and moving up to the value added segment.
