China's leather exports at $6 bn in Jan-Feb, trunks & suitcases lead

China’s exports of leather apparel and accessories stood at $6.038 billion during the first two months of 2024. Leather accessories, such as trunks, suitcases, vanity cases, and bags (HS code 420212), dominated the export basket. These leather products, under the HS code, accounted for 35.61 per cent of the total leather and apparel accessories exports from China during this period, with shipments valued at $2,150.491 million.

According to Fibre2Fashion's market insight tool TexPro, exports of leather products that fall under HS code 420292 (spectacles cases, camera cases, musical instrument cases, etc) were valued at $1,633.082 million. This made up 27.05 per cent of total exports of leather goods from China during the first two months of this year. This group of leather products ranked second among the top five groups of leather goods.

The shipment of leather products like insulated food or beverage bags, toilet bags, rucksacks, handbags, etc (code 420222) was noted at $1,189.660 million (19.70 per cent), while gun cases, holsters, and similar containers, and travelling bags (code 420232) amounted to $397.995 million (6.59 per cent), and saddlery and harness for animals (code 420100) stood at $158.655 million (2.63 per cent).

Last year, China’s total leather goods exports were registered at $39.733 billion. The value and share of leather products under code 420212 was $14.655 billion, which made up 36.89 per cent of the total shipment. Similarly, the value of exported leather products under code 420292 was $10.577 billion (26.72 per cent of total exports), those under code 420222 were valued at $6.770 billion (17.04 per cent), those under code 420232 at $2.584 billion (6.51 per cent), and those under code 420100 at $1.217 billion (3.07 per cent), according to TexPro.
