A team of researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IIT-K) has developed a kind of face mask that protects a person from external pollutants and viruses like the novel coronavirus and also from respiratory odour and bacteria. The team claims the mask is based on an odourless technology that absorbs the odour-producing particles.#
The carbon particles used in the mask absorb in odorous particles, giving a fresh feel while wearing the mask. Carbon is harmful to the body but when charged and prepared, its property changes and becomes harmless to the body.
The mask's outer layer renders the virus ineffective as the mask is coated with treated nanoparticles, according to Indian media reports.
The mask will be produced by a start-up called e-spin, set up at the Innovation and Incubation Centre at IIT-K. It has completed the testing phase and is set for mass production. The price of this mask will be slightly higher as compared to normal masks.
