The International Labour Organisation (ILO) had unveiled an occupational safety and health training programme in Bangladesh, which is expected to benefit around 800,000 workers working in the apparel industry. The programme titled 'Essentials of Occupational Safety and Health' (EOSH) has been developed by ILO's training centre in Turin, Italy.

The training programme will be implemented by the Bangladesh Employers Federation (BEF), with support from ILO and funding from UK, Netherlands and Canada.

EOSH will cover seven priority areas for the apparel industry namely; fire safety; electrical safety; trips, slips, falls and good housekeeping; dangerous substances; ergonomics; personal protective equipment and first aid.

In addition to the EOSH training, the initiative will also see 585 company representatives oriented on the formation of safety committees at factory level, with a goal to establish 110 functioning safety committees. (AR)
