The Indian government yesterday decided to continue the ban on export of specific personal protection equipment (PPE) like medical coveralls of all classes and goggles. The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), which had banned export of all PPE on January 31, said it has amended that earlier notification to allow export of other PPE items.

The PPE that are still banned include medical coveralls of all classes/categories; medical goggles; all masks other than non-medical/non surgical (cotton, silk, wool, polyester, nylon rayon, viscose - knitted, woven or blended) ; nitrile/nitrile rubber (NBR)gloves; and face shield, which are in huge demand on account of the pandemic.

Welcoming the decision, Apparel Export Promotion Council of India (AEPC) chairman A Sakthivel said the notification has clarified certain points which the industry was seeking.

DGFT had issued a notification on May 16 allowing export of non-medical/non-surgical masks of all types (cotton, silk, wool, knitted).
