Two major textile companies in Northern Ireland—Ulster Carpets based in Portadown, Co Armagh, and Mourne Textiles based in Rostrevor, Co Down—recently came together to create a new luxury fabric business, called Mourne Weavers, to offer cushions, blankets and curtain and furnishing fabrics to hotels, bars, restaurants, cruise ships and other luxury outlets.

The products will be similar to Mourne Textiles' distinctive hand-woven designs, inspired by the Mourne Mountains, the granite mountain range in County Down in the south-east of Northern Ireland. The new workshop will be based in Warrenpoint, Co Down.

Both businesses are still owned by the families of their founders. Founded in 1938 by George Walter Wilson, Ulster Carpets employs nearly 700 and has offices in the United States, Dubai, Paris and London. Mourne Textiles, founded in the late 1940s, creates a range of hand-woven goods that are sold in Japan, Australia, North America and Europe.

In 2016, Ulster Carpets bought London-based Roger Oates Design, which designs and produces luxury runners and rugs.

The investment will allow the company to expand further into a different sector, Irish media reports quoted Nick Coburn, group managing director at Ulster Carpets, as saying. (DS)
