Japan's clothing imports up 8.4% in H1 2018-19

Japan’s imports of clothing and accessories increased by 8.4 per cent year-on-year to 1,654.059 billion yen ($14.64 billion) in the first half of Japanese fiscal 2018-19 that began on March 1. Of this, 92.66 per cent or 1,532.688 billion yen ($13.56 billion) worth of goods were imported from Asia, according to trade statistics from the ministry of finance.
 
Among the Asian countries, imports from China stood at 988.994 billion yen ($8.75 billion), an increase of 3.1 per cent year-on-year, the data showed.
 
During April-September 2018-19, Japan imported apparel and accessories worth 88.337 billion yen ($0.78 billion) from the EU, up 7.8 per cent year-on-year. The Far Eastern country also imported 6.801 billion yen ($60.18 million) worth of clothing and accessories from the US, up 2.9 per cent.
 
Meanwhile, the value of Japan’s import of textile yarn and fabrics increased 3.8 per cent year-on-year to 475.821 billion yen ($4.21 billion) during the period under review. A bulk of these imports valued at 421.927 billion yen ($3.73 billion) were supplied by the countries in the Asian region, with China alone accounting for 259.611 billion yen ($2.30 billion), while imports from Asean nations stood at 101.845 billion yen ($0.90 billion).
 
Japan imported yarn and fabric worth 33.053 billion yen ($292.47 million) from the EU countries, whereas its imports from the US were valued at 11.969 billion yen ($105.91 million), during the half-year period. (RKS)
