According to the workers’ representative Shamsunnahar Bhuiyan, the board sets the date for a meeting as per the owners’ wish. She said it was not acceptable that the board would not hold meeting without the consent of the factory owners.
The Bangladesh Government had in January this year formed a minimum wage board to review the wages for the RMG workers. The board held its first meeting on March 19. Its second meeting scheduled on April 25 was postponed and the next date is yet to be set, according to Bangladesh media reports.
Bhuiyan said most trade union federations have demanded 16,000 taka as the minimum monthly wage while two other organisations want 18,000 taka. (DS)
