New Zealand apparel imports continue to dip, $504 mn in Jan-May

New Zealand’s apparel imports have continued their downward trend so far this year. Imports saw modest gains in 2022, but since then the inbound trend has remained in negative territory. The country’s apparel imports stood at $504.878 million during January–May 2025, which was 0.98 per cent lower than the $509.437 million recorded in the same period last year.

New Zealand’s total apparel imports reached $1,177.409 million in 2024, marking a decline of 0.59 per cent from $1,184.349 million in 2023. In 2022, imports had increased by 2.08 per cent to $1,274.679 million, up from $1,248.195 million in 2021. However, imports slowed by 7.06 per cent to $1,184.349 million in 2023, according to sourcing intelligence tool TexPro.

China remained the largest source of imports, accounting for 60.27 per cent of the total in the first five months of 2025. Imports from China were valued at $304.308 million during this period, down 0.99 per cent from $307.347 million in January–May 2024.

Bangladesh, the second-largest supplier, exported $54.007 million worth of apparel to New Zealand during the first five months of the current year, accounting for 10.70 per cent of total imports. This was a 1.19 per cent decrease from $54.657 million during the same period in 2024.

In contrast, Vietnam—the third-largest supplier—maintained positive growth. Imports from Vietnam totalled $38.644 million, up 12.47 per cent from $34.361 million in January–May 2024. Vietnam’s share in New Zealand’s total apparel imports stood at 7.65 per cent, as per TexPro.

New Zealand imported apparel worth $16.802 million from Indonesia and $15.251 million from India during January–May 2025, accounting for 3.33 per cent and 3.02 per cent of the total, respectively. Imports from both countries grew by up to 10.89 per cent during the first five months of 2024.
