Garment makers in Bangladesh have ruled out all possibilities of any workers unrest, stating that 90 percent of over 5,000 garment factories in the country have already settled all dues of workers, including overtime bills and festival allowances.

Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) President Shafiul Islam Mohiuddin said 90 percent of the factories have cleared workers’ wages, overtime bills and advanced salaries of first 15 days of the current month.

He added that the rest 10 percent garment makers who have not been able to clear workers’ dues till now due to maintenance of shipping deadlines, would also clear the same shortly.

The decision on postponing payment of workers’ dues in these factories was taken in pursuance of successful talks between the garment owners and their workers, so there are no apprehensions of any workers’ unrest, Mr. Mohiuddin added.

BGMEA, the apex garment body of Bangladesh, said its leaders carried out a probe into 845 factories across the country and carried out successful negotiations with owners of 37 units to clear all sort of confusions that could lead to unrest.
