The Woolmark labelled apparels will soon be available with an integrated technology that will allow the consumers to identify its authenticity, the Australian Wool Innovation Limited (AWI) has said.

Woolmark label validates products made using 100 percent genuine Australian wool. However, the label has been facing counterfeiting problems.

Australian wool industry is losing thousands of dollars every year because of the use of counterfeit woolmark labels, but with the implementation of the new technology the industry will be able to tackle the problem to some extent, said Mr. Stuart McCullough, the Chief Executive Officer of AWI.

The new technology will allow a microchip to be positioned in a garment’s washing instruction tag, which can be easily detected by a simple smart phone application to confirm the genuine woolmark product.

Owned by more than 29,000 Australian woolgrowers, AWI is a non-profit company that invests in research, development and marketing for the Australian wool industry.
