While in Beijing to meet various textile and apparel associations, IAF President Harry van Dalfsen was deeply shocked by the recent tragedy in an apparel factory in Bangladesh, the biggest ever in terms of casualties in the Bangladesh garment industry. His sympathy is with the victims and their families.

Van Dalfsen stressed that many companies in the apparel chain have made huge improvements in social compliance and sustainability by training, educating and monitoring suppliers in order to meet national and/or local government regulations.

Nevertheless, this tragedy, and the recent one in Pakistan, showed that extra steps have to be taken to improve the working conditions for workers in the industry. The IAF Global Responsibility Committee is running a very active program to achieve these goals.

This issue will also be raised at the next IAF Board Meeting to be held in Mumbai (India) and at the 29th IAF World Apparel Convention to be held on 23-25 September 2013 in Shanghai (China).
