Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) is taking major steps to ensure safety of the workers in garment factories.

After examining the working conditions, BGMEA has instructed its 53 member factories to provide atleast two exits that will help evacuate workers during fire or other such accidents.

Tipu Munshi, President, assured that action will be taken against factories who fail to meet these norms within about 45 days.

BGMEA informed that currently, 43 units were operating and the remaining ten had been closed down on account of lack of facilities.

The Association was forced to take this step after the disastrous fire in the Chittagong KTS garment factory on February 25 that saw a loss of 59 labourers and severely injuring about 150 workers.

BGMEA aims to establish a healthy business environment and mutually beneficial relationship between the manufacturers, exporters and importers in the process ensuring a steady growth in the foreign exchange earnings of the country.

Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA) has also joined these efforts.
