Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) has urged the International Labour Organization (ILO) to give technical support for improving the skills of mid and higher level management in the country’s garment industry.

Bangladesh’s apparel industry needs technical support from the ILO and Urban Partnerships for Poverty Reduction Project (UPPR) for strengthening industrial and production engineering in the apparel industry, BGMEA president M Atiqul Islam said at a function in Dhaka, BSS reported.

The event was organized in connection with the successful completion of first round of training by 25 garment workers. The skill development training was imparted under the UPPR project, being implemented with support from UNDP and the UK’s Department for International Development (DFID).

After the Tazreen factory fire and Rana Plaza collapse, readymade garment manufacturers are currently under severe pressure, and there is a dire need of training for both mid-level management as well as workers in the industry, Mr. Islam said.

He sought extension of the duration of UPPR, which is scheduled to end next year.

Per Olof Bertilsson, international project manager of UPPR, said BGMEA should take initiative to establish a training centre that would provide quality training to both workers and people at various managerial positions in the garment industry.
