Faruque Hassan, Vice-President of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) said the World Trade Organization (WTO) has rated Bangladesh to be the fourth largest garment exporter, contributing around three percent of total exports, internationally.

He said the 30-year-old RMG industry of Bangladesh, with a stunning growth in exports, for the last two decades, has transformed itself into a global sourcing centre.

Bangladesh is the biggest exporter of cotton T-shirts and stands second in exporting cotton pullover and jeans to European countries. As also the country, in terms of volume is the second biggest exporter of cotton trousers to United States, he said.

The BGMEA Vice-President further stated that, though economical, garment manufacturing still holds to be a significant competitive edge for the country. But then mounting competition in the apparel markets, the world over, has necessitated the producers to churn out quality goods, with added fidelity towards customers and social accountability in the factories. All these factors jointly, have led Bangladesh to emerge as a global supplier of clothing.

Currently, Bangladesh in its more than 5,000 garment manufacturing units employs around 2 million people, of whom 90 percent are women.
