Tremors are being felt across the Indian garment export sector as in all likelihood; India may find itself once again in the Trafficking Victims Protection Reauthorization Act (TVPRA List), which will be announced by the US in September 2010.
India had found mention in the last list prepared by the US administration in September 2009, after which the industry had stepped up its efforts to seriously cleanse the sector of the stigma of child labour attached to it.
The apex body of garment exporters, Apparel Export Promotion Council (AEPC), too had recently, drafted a common compliance code in line with global industry norms and had also engaged US based attorneys to lobby for India.
To put matters in better perspective, the US, is the biggest market for Indian textile and clothing exports and a mention once again in the TVPRA List, could have serious recupersions for the apparel industry in India.
Indian government and AEPC officials had recently visited Washington and met the US Department of Labour officials, in a last-ditch effort to save India from finding mention for the second year in succession in the TVPRA List.
